US Ex-Cop Gets 3 Years Jail In George Floyd’s Murder

Currently serving a term of 2-and-a-half years in a federal prison in Colorado, Thomas Lane appeared via video connection during his brief sentencing hearing in Hennepin County District Court.

On Wednesday, a former Minneapolis police officer was sentenced to three years in jail after pleading guilty to a state charge of aiding and abetting in the assassination of George Floyd, a Black man whose murder upset people all over the world.
Thomas Lane, who was found guilty in February by a federal jury on counts of violating Floyd’s civil rights, appeared via video connection during his brief sentencing hearing in Hennepin County District Court from a federal prison in Colorado, where he is already serving a term of 2-1/2 years.

On May 25, 2020, Floyd was fatally arrested alongside three other cops when they accused him of using a counterfeit $20 note to buy smokes at a grocery shop in Minneapolis. Lane was 39 at the time.

Derek Chauvin, a white coworker of Lane’s, was shown on cellphone footage for more than nine minutes kneeling on the neck of a shackled, dying Floyd. Protests against racism and police violence have continued every day since the video’s release in places around the United States.

At his state trial in 2021, the jury found Chauvin guilty on many counts, including second-degree murder for which he received a sentence of 22 and a half years in prison. Chauvin was found guilty on all counts of federal civil rights violations against Floyd in July and was given a concurrent sentence of 21 years in prison.

Earlier this year, white Minnesota defendant Lane agreed to a plea bargain with state prosecutors. The other two accused cops, Tou Thao and Alexander Kueng, were also found guilty on federal civil rights charges but have pleaded not guilty to state counts of aiding and abetting Floyd’s murder and will go to trial in Hennepin County in October.

During the violent arrest, Lane and Kueng helped tie down Floyd’s legs and buttocks, while Thao restrained terrified onlookers who yelled for the police to get off Floyd, who screamed for his life before passing out.
